It's not uncommon, but arguably unfair, to associate many eastern European cities with the bleak post-communist era apartment complexes that often fill them. Albania's capital city of Tirana is colorful proof against this geographical stereotype.
Shortly after taking office, former mayor and artist Edi Rama began painting the town red...orange, yellow, blue, green and purple. He had the facades of many of the city's buildings painted in bright colors and the makeover has made the city a vibrant home for its citizens and an intriguing destination for the rest of us.
