I saw this DIY bookmark idea while cruising the archives of a new favorite blog called d.Sharp Journal. Re-use old envelopes by cutting the corners to serve as disposable, notable, bookmarks. I love the idea. I will use anything within reaching distance as a bookmark; receipts, napkins, bobby pins, you name it. Not only do I adore the re-use/recycle aspect of this project, but I love the ability to customize each bookmark with notes.

Wouldn't it fall off really easily? Seems like a pretty precarious bookmark.
Within moments of reading this I had created four of these things.
I now have a kitty and a little monster that are nomming the corners of my class books.

What a fantastic idea, starting straight away. I often use anything handy and there is alway an envelope around- good one!!
My husband will get a kick out of this! He appreciates having a bookmark handy when he (kindly) removes from my hands,the book I fell asleep into at bedtime.
Time to clip envelope corners before recycling them. They might be an interesting way to mark pages in sketch books after decorating them too?

We have all heard of folding over the page corner. There is even a name for it "dog earing" -- as in "dog earing the corner of a page".
But it permanently creases the corner of book's page -- which is perfectly fine for your own book or magazine -- but it isn't acceptable practise for books you are borrowing from friend or library or if you care about your books or magazines.
On library books especially it can actually lead to corners of the pages coming off in time and some collections -- personal and public -- actually carry value.
Sorry, but I am a book lover and I have to stand up for the idea not being so stupid.
When I was in school we always had tons of those tractor feed strips decolated from computer printouts and I used them for cheap bookmarks.
Mind you... there are far worse travesties in the world than dog earing book corners... and dog earing corners and making margin notes is a way of making a book your own... so there are two sides to that whole thing.

As for turning over the corner of a page! Not in my house! And I don't think the library would like it either.

The only dog eared books you'll find in my library were there when I got the book. I can always manage to find something at hand or until then simply memorize the page number until I can get somehting.
Just admitting that other folks have different views for their own books. ...I don't make page notes either except for working textbooks where I did highlighting and attached tabs to pages for easy referral.
I have 9 or 10 five foot tall book shelves of books without counting periodicals. Unfortunately they are on 6 bookshelves...

Hi, You have to get the size right or they can tend to tumble off the corner of the pages if the book is carried about.
Two ideas. One is that you can cut the corner off the corner making a sort of ribbon that goes diagonally across the corner of the book. The other goes hand-in-hand is that you can make more than one bookmark with each corner if you should need to... or if you get an envelope of interesting texture or colour.
You might play with other cutouts along the edge of the envelope corner too...

I use a bobby pin as a book mark. It doesn't hurt the page, and I always seem to have one on hand/hair. :)
